In the olden days, one day a week was set aside to do that dreaded chore, laundry. Wash day was a day when water was carried from the creek, well, spring or pump to fill a tub on a wood burning stove. The handmade lye soap was put into the water and the white clothes would be added. Boiling would loosen the dirt and stains, the fabric would have to be rubbed and wrung out by hand, then rinsed in another tub of water. Then the other clothes would be washed. The clothes would be hung out on clotheslines to dry. Washday was a backbreaking job that people were happy to see gone with the advent of the washing machine.
The new washing machine called for new detergents to get the clothes clean since boiling was no longer available. These new detergents did clean clothes, but they were made from harsh chemicals. Many of them toxic to both skin and soil.
Today many people are finding they do laundry on a daily basis, not having time to set aside one day a week to do it. With all the perfumes and chemicals in today’s laundry detergents, all too many are finding their skin itching and strange rashes appearing. All sorts of anti-itch creams and lotions are applied, to no avail. The laundry with its toxic chemicals and perfumes is not even a suspect in these mysterious rashes and itches. It should be!
